IPL Q & A

MD Weight Loss Skincare & Laser

What is intense pulsed light therapy?

Intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) is a photo-rejuvenation treatment that works to reduce redness, age spots, broken blood vessels, brown spots, and more. IPL technology involves multiple wavelengths of light to correct sun-damaged skin on the neck, chest, hands, and face.

IPL is a noninvasive and non-ablative treatment involving precise high-intensity pulses of light to treat skin concerns, such as:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Lines and wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Scarring

IPL can also be used to treat certain skin conditions, such as rosacea.

What can I expect during my intense pulsed light therapy?

Your MD skin care specialist applies anesthetic cream to the treatment area about 30 to 60 minutes before your treatment to make the process more comfortable for you. You wear protective eyewear designed to protect your eyes from the light.

Your MD specialist guides the IPL handpiece over the treatment area and delivers the pulses of light to your skin.

Some patients describe the treatment as a mild, tolerable, stinging sensation similar to a rubber band lightly snapping on your skin.

The IPL treatments usually take around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Most patients require around three to six treatments for the best results and treatments must be spaced about one month apart.

What can I expect after my intense pulsed light therapy?

Following your IPL treatment, you might experience mild redness of the treatment area, but this should subside after a few days. Some brown spots might appear darker and peel off a few days later.

You can apply makeup directly after your treatment if you’d like.

It’s important you protect your skin following your procedure and follow the instructions given to you by your MD skin care specialist. Make sure you’re using the recommended daily sunscreens and sensitive skin moisturizer and cleanser.

After about one week, you can resume your normal skincare routine. The results of IPL are long-lasting. Many patients return for maintenance and touch-up treatments once or twice every year.

The MD skin care specialists use the Palomar® laser system to drastically reduce wrinkles and provide skin rejuvenation.
